Very Very - Cristina Caprioli

It all starts with a sound. and light. and a vertical wand, made of barrels made out of mirror. Those are reflected on the floor. Light, that goes all over the reflections, lightening them like bar codes. Over and over again. slowly, quickly.
And then, two dancers. In black. They start dancing.
And for the next 50 min, they won't stop dancing.
A very physical, technical dance, all around rythmus, and precision.
And still the electronic sound. Fast no music. And the choreography. The dancers keep doing the same combinations again and again, with always the same impulse, the same focus.
They will stop twice or three times, a few seconds, to change clothes. You can see their physical effort.
This is called "very very", from the Italian, now in Sweden based, choreographer Cristina Caprioli, awarded a Cullberg Prize for her choreography.
And this was part of the Tanzwerkstatt Europa.
I was a bit unsure when I came in, in the big hall of the Muffathalle that can serve any purpose, here changed in a showroom; with a stage, and seats... What would I do? Would I like it? Would it be interesting from a choreographic point of view?
I was not disappointed at all, far from that. The choreography was amazing, contemporary, but highly inspired from Cunningham, and from ballet. Not at all the kind of dance where dancers spend half of their time on the floor. Here, all was physical, technical, using ballet steps, and contemporary steps. I heard someone in the audience call it very conventional. Well, it surely was from a purely technical point of view. But the result was grat. This play with lights, mirrors, reflexions, etc was interesting. And you could feel that the steps, though exhausting, weere pleasant for the body to do. quite natural, I would say
I just regret that one of the two dancers was obviously lacking a ballet training. Legs were not streched, all the body was too released. It was also a pitty that she could not use her arms correctly while a lot was focused on the arms. But the other dancer was great. With a lot of intensity in her dance.
In the end, a very good experience, that allowed me to discover a new choreographer.
