Part of the happening. Waiting room

New production at the Bayerische Staatsoper. Zugvögel von Jirí Kylián.
An experiment. When dance and performing arts are reinvented. When the public take part in the show. When the show is not only on stage but everywhere.

The concept of taking the show out of stage is not new. However, in opera houses, it is very ambitious and innovative. Only very few people have done it so far. The most recent exemple I can remember of is Jose Martinez and his Les enfants du Paradis. THis is just like breaking all the boundaries that exists in the theatre, and that define who belong to where. Everything is mixed, and the audience gets in the show, becomes part of it. The public world of theater, the stage world and the behin the stage world are one at least.

This is this experiment that Jiri Kylian has conducted in the opera house. Indeed, the show was divided in two parts. While the second part was made of the show on stage it self, the first part was a happening. A walk behind the stage, under the stage, on the stage, during which you suddenly meet weird creatures (dancers) in the least expected places. Zugvögel, migrating birds. we were all migrating birds in those unkwnown corridors.

I personnally really enjoyed the first part of the show, because this behing the stage world is really where I belong. And because being on stage was also a great feeling. And I could imagine what it would have been like to be on stage for Aida.

As to the second part of the show, I have to say that I haven't been totally convinced. I find Jiri Kylian better for short pieces than for this 1 hour 30 piece. First of all, the whole point of the story was not clear. A study on the artist whan he has become to old to be on stage, and must leave his world. But weird so weird. And Kylian decided to use video, and dance sequences were interrupted by film sequences. Or the opposite. This has disturbed me a bit, not to find a unity in the show. However, Kylian is Kylian and will remain Kylian. That means that his duets and solos are as beautiful as ever. His language is just so fluid, so emotional.

So in the end, I do not regret to have attended the performance, but I was expecting more dance...
